Sightseeing

This is one of the most historically interesting areas of France and all the major attractions are within a short drive from the house. The banks of the river Dordogne have been inhabited since prehistoric times and the area played centre stage to many of the rivalries of the middle ages. These are only a few of the highlights, with so much more to discover.

Medieval towns and villages
RocamadourSarlat
- one of the most famous medieval towns in the region with narrow streets, lively squares and cafés and twice weekly market.

Rocamadour - Perched on a cliff, this medieval town offers the most beautiful and dramatic setting and has been on the pilgrimage map for centuries.

La Roque GageacLa Roque Gageac - One of the most beautiful villages of France, right on the banks of the Dordogne

Martel - Known for its seven towers, Martel boasts numerous medieval buildings and a very atmospheric market on Wednesdays.

And also Souillac,Loubressac, Domme, Saint-Céré and many more.!

Castles
CastelnaudCastelnaud - the most popular castle in the south of France.

A medieval fortress perched on a rock high over the river, it houses a famous collection of arms and armours as well as medieval war machines.

BeynacBeynac - the castle stands on a remarkable site, rising from the top of a rock as it overlooks the valley spotted with hills crowned with castles.

Once captured by Richard the Lion Hearted, and over the years and during numerous wars it was destroyed and then rebuilt.

There is a sheer drop of almost 500 ft. from the chateau to the river, and the view is spectacular.

Caves
LascauxDue to the number of rivers and the local geology it is no surprise that the area has some magnificent cave complexes.

You will find two different types: "Gouffres" are underground caves, whilst "Grottes" are usually accessed from a rock face. Most offer traditional stalagmite/stalactite formations, although some are famous for their ancient cave paintings.

Only 5 min drive from the house, you will find the Grottes de Lacave, one of the finest geological caves in France. The Gouffres de Padirac and Proumeyssac are some other favourites, and a visit to Lascaux, with its famous 17 000 year old paintings, is a must!

For children
Just in case castles and caves are not enough for your little ones, there are lots of themed parks and attractions specifically designed with children in mind. Locally in Souillac you will find Quercyland, a water based leisure park with water slides and 6 swimming pools. We also recommend a visit to the Rocher des Aigles in Rocamadour, and Prehistologia (a large wooded park offering a unique insight into prehistoric life). Similar to this is PrehistoParc in Tursac.

Gardens
Locally you will be able to discover some of the most stunning gardens of the Perigord:

EyrignacEyrignac - 3 stars at the green Michelin guide, these stunning gardens offer a fine example of formal French gardens with clipped hedges and topiary.

MarqueyssacMarqueyssac - A listed site offering over 6km of shaded paths leading to a belvedere giving an exceptional view of the Dordogne valley.
